PEEK resin was researched and developed by the British ICI company in the late 1970s. It was industrialized in the early 1980s and was put on the market under the trade name “Victrex-PEEK”.
British Victrex is one of the earliest manufacturers of PEEK resin in the world. It has a monopoly position in PEEK resin products. The market sales volume continues to grow at a rate of 20% per year. In 2001, net income increased by 37% to US$32.3 million. Sales increased 23% to $104.3 million. The production capacity of the company's PEEK resin has been expanded four times in 1996, 1999, 2000 and 2003, and the production capacity has reached 2,800 tons / year. And in order to ensure the supply of raw materials, Victrex achieved reverse integration of production. In 1999 and 2000, it purchased a production plant of difluorobenzophenone (DFDPM) and a production plant of hydroquinone (BDF) (50%). % shares). In addition, Victrex plans to build a second set of equivalent PEEK resin production units and a second set of difluorodiphenyl ketone production units in Salton Krevilles in the next three or four years. The PEEK resin production unit supplies raw materials.
Victrex sells PEEK resin products in Europe through its subsidiary Victrex Europe, sells PEEK resin products in the US through its subsidiary Victrex USA, and is formed in Japan through Mitsui Chemicals Co., Ltd. (shares 51/49 of which Mitsui Chemicals Co., Ltd. 49 %) The joint venture Victrex MC sells PEEK resin products.
Recently, Gharda Chemical Company of Mumbai, India, cooperated with Victrex to build a semi-industrial production unit of PEEK resin with a capacity of 120 tons/year in Mumbai, India. The production unit is produced in a different process route than Victrex. It uses only one monomer material and has a lower process cost than Victrex. The PEEK products produced are darker in color but 10% to 15% cheaper than Victrex products. Gharda plans to expand it to an industrial production scale of 800 to 1,000 tons per year in the next few years. In the long run, Gharda Chemical will be a strong contender for Victrex, and will at least grab 10% of the world's PEEK market.
In addition, some multinational chemical companies such as DuPont and BASF also produce PEEK-like high-performance polymers, such as polyetheretherketone, but have not yet achieved industrial production.
At present, the total consumption of PEEK resin in the world is about 1,800 tons / year, of which about 48% in Europe, 41% in the United States, about 6% in the Asia-Pacific region, and about 5% in other regions. The products are mainly used in some fields including aviation, industry, electronics and medical departments, in which the transportation industry accounts for about 34% of the total consumption, the industrial sector accounts for about 31%, and the electronics accounts for about 23%. The field accounts for about 6%, and other aspects account for about 6%.
